Daytona Beach Flea & Farmers Market. Florida. 2013-2019

The Daytona Beach Flea and Farmers Market has become a town staple just minutes away from the Daytona International Speedway, home of NASCAR. The flea market functions on a 3-day weekend full of specialty items attributed to the tourist culture of Florida; Race Week, Bike Week, Spring Break, Biketoberfest. While the tourists drive the main attractions, there is plenty of the odd and unexpected provided by locals from booth to booth. I was brought back to the market in my young adult life by memories from my youth; barrels full of pickles and olives in all imaginable flavors, sweet smells of kettle corn and candied pecans, the idea of running into exotic animals that people mistook for pets, admiring the extensive and often outrageous collections in which someone holds value in. This photographic series is a result of seeking inspiration in a place where I felt stagnant due to my overextended stay. I find myself frequenting the market with each trip back 'home', eager to witness the cultural shifts that take place from year to year.
